Think of the Children

So how about a little overview of  the carey children who they married

George Carey went to marry Elizabeth Spencer around 1574 and he suprisingly had only one child (suprising should you compare to his father)

John married Mary Hyde (amusingly wasn't Hyde park the property of his father) around 1576 and was a widow.

Henry Jr wife seem to be unknown, however  record show henry tried to get him married to one of the daughter of Lord Conyers (I suspect he was dead though he probably was dead and his title unocupied)

William was married off to Martha Turner , she said to be the daughter of Thomas Turner,  the only notable I've seen around that time with that name were MP, but that doesn't confirm anything.

Edmund was married three times once to Mary Cocker and a second time to a widow Elizabeth Danvers (né Neville) and a third time to Judith Humphrey

Robert as mentioned previously was married to Elizabeth Trevanion.

Katherine was of course married to Charles Howard

Margaret was married to Edward Hoby, the two never seem to have gotten any children despiste being married 23 years together (she died in 1605), but Edward illegitimate one, he also remarried afterward what weird is this. According to Tudorplace (who I admit not above making a mistake) is that apparently Edmund married the mother of Edward wife( apparently for political reason)

Philadelphia married Thomas Scope. who while she doesn't seem to have a portrait (Thomas apparently prefered to be with his mom) do have a momument.

Two little things

Here a little thing from 1575, in which apparently Sir Philip Sydney apparently heard two sons of Lord Hunsdon had died (page 122), this is of course wrong has him and and his two elder son were not anywhere around Ireland at that time. The note also mention that the events were in fact pure rumour. Also the other thing is the Thesis yet again (source) page 42 of the pdf and 38. Has it provide a good list of the Carey family involvement into the action of the border.

I was originally planning to write of Philadelphia Carey, though I think most about her can be found here, though like always I'd be not too sure about the place of birth given although I didn't have the ability to properly verify most of it (though the part about Earl of Essex is interesting, I have no idea where they pulled the place of birth however)
 

What sorta got my interest is that apparently according to the same website, Robert Carey married Elizabeth Trevanion which while it don't seemt like much, her birth mother is given as Sybilla Morgan and the parents  of Sybilla apparently are  Thomas Morgan and Elizabeth Whitney, meaning he married a first degree cousin.

Mind you there is nothing particular odd about this at the time since such liason were common in the nobility. I mainly look into this because I thought approaching the Carey geanalogy from Sybilla may help.

Problem is though that she and her husband are probably even more obscure than Thomas Morgan so far I've found two diverging version of the event. A big problem is that there is no defintivie answer.

First one is the one I've mention prior hand which to come from A genealogical and heraldic dictionary of the landed gentry of Great Britain & Ireland for 1852 around page 1432, I'm pretty sure this is the source of most recent claim as to a cousin relation between the two.

Second one while interesting is just as much as a end dead. It come from a survey of Cornwall 1620 (page 240) as you can see it put a bit more uncertainty as to the exact lineage of Sybilla. Her father is given as simply a Morgan from "Lockstowe" which seem to be nowhere on the map except in those page. While we have seen arkstone (Thomas presume home village) the name don't quite fit except for the last part and apparently at the time another line of Carey was of importance in Langstone. I've found some hint of a Morgan lineage in the town of Langstone, but can't quite quite confirm anything at the moment. Either way trying to lock in on the pair seem fruitless 

You would think the memoirs of Robert Carey would shed some light on the issue but his memoirs are, but nothing about his marriage indicate it was one between cousin. It seem however he has a level of infatuation with his wife as he married for her character apparently rather than some sort of larger political machination (page 51) Queen Elizabeth was actually pissed off by this marriage without authorisation but his father was fine with it.

The second child of Henry Carey and Anne Morgan is Katherine Carey , she would later mary the count of Nothingham and use the name Howard*. Her usual place of birth is put around 1548, though sometime I've a year or two before.

*The fact her name usually spell has been spell with a K as much with a C a bit of a god bless if you ask me cause it made her stand out from Henry sister Catherine and Katherine Howard who was Henry VIII fifth wife. Like her mother, her aunt and her sister Philadelphia she was one of Elizabeth (apparently was a particularly close one as the queen was seemingly depress by her death, just a few days prior her own). Depressingly enough, Anne Morgan apparently outlived her eldest daughter and her eldest son. Though apparently only came in to the court around the age of 12 or 13 around in. Her husband, Charles Howard was apparently distantly related to her.  The man was an important figure of the fight against the spanish armada. (the being bless article going to tell you everything in much better details than I ever will)

What to say about George Carey? Well I won't dwell too much on details today, because I believe some episode need to be looked up more precisely in themselves than in summary (and they are many years later in our story). He is the second lord of Hunsdon, yes, however he died . Apparently for venerial disease and the "cure" against it if wikipedia is to be believe and apparently his father did the same treatement  according to Weir.) He seem to follow the footsteps of his father for the most part, but don't seem quite to shine (though he did go to college apparently at the age of 13, a much younger age than his father who got his MA in art when he was 38 ). However, if there is one thing I found rather interesting is that he apparently was a pretender to Mary Queen of Scott, but it like I said before it is for later.

Most of them give his birthdate as circa 1547 , though the dictionnary of national biography gives you more precise one and place it even further down on 26 february 1548, citing Berkeley Castle muniments. (I think the connection between Berkeley Castle and the Carey is that his sole daughter ended up marrying a Berkeley)

Allow me to disgress but trying to find the reference for that date I've actually found something rather informative and who has reference to Henry Carey.

721. page 213 The thomas More definitively is not the more famous Thomas More at the time since his head and his neck already had been split by that time for many years, but it seem to be guy Henry put in charge of his land in Bukchighamshire (though I really think I'm misreading the entry). What weird is that the entry is dated from 1553 and Henry still 5 years away from being Lord Hunsdon. Then again it is a catalogue, so they probably added it in in order

737. Page 219 Well add another name to plug as this seem to be Sir William Cecil apparently secretary of state  at the time of the entry of 1552, I can't find anything about a College of St. Stephen in England

739. Page 220 Like a lot of the entry I can't quite make sense of it, something about gold.

754 and 756. Page 223 His appointement to sommert house, I already knew that. The other one not sure I understand.

762. Page 226 Henry Carey fighting pirate, fuck yeah!

775. Page 228 Deed of sale, but at least this time he's buying something

780. Page 229 Hum first time I heard of John Colyn being a ward of Henry Carey and George and so far my google search to lead to squat (there a chance other record spell it diffently). Although this ain't the only person who became George Carey ward as Henry Sanford was also apparently  one too (you can find him on the DNB)

796. Page 233 I already knew Henry Carey was the bodyguard of queen during the spanish armada episode.

799 & 800. Page 234 Another appointement, justice of the forest sound like a super hero name.

802. Page 235 Well...I guess its nice the sister get to join the brother...

815 Page 238 Henry seem to have more ward than Batman! (ok its not a very high number, I admit), sorta suprise I haven't of any of those people so far.
